Bela Lugosi's Personal Newspaper Clipping Scrapbook From His Collection

Location # HR
Amazing piece of movie history from the man who created the modern version of Count Dracula. In 1931, Bela Lugosi played Dracula in the 1931 Universal film based on Bram Stoker's novel. Lugosi's interpretation of the role of the blood thirsty count has become the standard for many other versions. In Stoker's book, Count Dracula was a dead, smelly, walking corpse. Lugosi made the character into a master of mind control, able to seduce women with his piercing eyes. Ask any young boy to talk like Dracula, and he will imitate Lugosi's Hungarian accent. This newspaper clipping scrapbook was owned by Bela Lugosi. The newspaper clippings are marked with red numbers, suggesting he purchased them from a clipping service, then he and his wife, Lillian, glued them into the scrapbook. Also included in the scrapbook are Lugosi's personal copies of his movie pressbooks and theater programs. The scrapbook has been authenticated by Lugosi authors and scholars Gary Rhodes and Arthur Lenig. The history of the scrapbook: After Lugosi passed away, Hope, his last wife, gave it to Richard Sheffield, the boy who befriended Lugosi during his final years. While attending Forry Ackerman's auction in the 1980's, Richard added this scrapbook and another to the auction line up. Comes with a LOA from the auction bidder, email correspondence with Richard Sheffield, and letters from Arthur Lenig and Gary Rhodes verifying authenticity and thanking me for allowing access to the information for both of their books. The scrapbook is visible in a photo of Lugosi's home. Movies covered in the scrapbook: Black Camel, White Zombie, Frankenstein, Murders in the Rue Morgue and more. Click here for an article I wrote about the scrapbook.

Vampira Self Portrait Oil Painting of Herself.

Location # HR
Maila Nurmi, known to her fans as Vampira from Plan 9 From Outer Space and her TV series, was also an amazing artist. She did many drawings of herself, but it is estimated she completed less than 50 oil paintings of herself as Vampira. This painting comes with a photo of her holding the painting and her notes on the back, stating that she mixed authentic cemetery soil into the paint.

Claude Rains' Caesar and Cleopatra Stills with Notations. Produced in England in 1945 and the most expensive British film production to that time, Caesar and Cleopatra, based on George Bernard Shaw's play, starred Claude Rains and Vivien Leigh as the doomed royal lovers, under the direction of Gabriel Pascal. These three 7.5" x 9.5" still proofs include a shot of Rains and Leigh on a palatial set, on which Rains has written in pencil on the reverse "Farewell"; a shot of Rains and Stewart Granger, with Rains having penciled on the reverse, "Apollodorous and Me"; and an exterior shot of Rains amidst throngs of soldiers and extras, making a grand entrance. On the reverse of this last shot, Rains has written in pencil, "Caesar and Co. enter the Palace steps for last scene"; he adds something indecipherable regarding DeMille, then writes, "Just before the take, Pascal (director) said, 'When you make the entrance, think of Mussolini.' Jesus!!!!" The shot with Granger has the words "Rough Proof" written in the upper left area of the picture, a 1" tear mark touching Rains' foot and a modern script page attached to the reverse (which could easily be removed), and the grand entrance shot has some minor creasing; otherwise, they are in overall Very Good condition. From the Claude Rains Estate Archive. Accompanied by James Spence Authentication auction LOA
